Frequently asked questions
Questions are welcome here.
If you're new to counseling — or new to counseling with me — here's what most people want to know before reaching out. If your question isn't answered, just ask.
Getting started
What happens in the first session?
Mostly we talk. I'll ask about what brought you in, what's been hardest, and what you'd like to be different. There's no pressure to tell me everything at once — we go at your pace, and by the end we'll have a sense of where to begin.
How long are sessions, and how often?
Sessions are 45 minutes. Most people start weekly, then move to every other week as things stabilize. We'll decide together what rhythm actually helps.
How long will I be in counseling?
It depends on what you're working through and what you want out of it. Some people come for a specific season and finish in a couple of months; others stay longer. There's no minimum commitment — you're free to stop whenever you'd like.
Do you see adolescents?
Yes — ages 12 and up. A parent or guardian must provide consent, and I'll talk with you both about how confidentiality works for teens before we begin.
Faith, privacy & practicalities
Do I have to be a Christian to see you?
Not at all. Everyone is welcome, and you'll receive the same care either way. For clients who want it, I integrate Christian faith into our work; for those who don't, we simply don't go there. Your beliefs and goals lead.
Is what I say confidential?
Yes, with a few limits required by Texas law — if there's risk of serious harm to you or someone else, suspected abuse of a child or vulnerable adult, or a court order. I'll walk you through all of it in your first session.
What is EMDR, exactly?
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. It's a structured, well-researched therapy that uses guided eye movements to help the brain file away distressing memories properly — so they stop intruding on the present. You don't have to describe every detail of what happened.
Do you take insurance?
This is a self-pay practice — $75 individual, $90 couples. On request I can provide a superbill for possible out-of-network reimbursement through your plan.
What's your cancellation policy?
Please give at least 24 hours' notice so the time can go to someone else. Late cancellations and no-shows may be charged the full session fee.
If you need help right now
This practice isn't set up for emergencies, and messages here aren't monitored around the clock. If you're in crisis, please reach out to one of these instead — they're staffed 24/7.
Still have a question?
Ask me directly — there's no such thing as a question that's too small to bring.
